Meet Star

Star is a very special mare with an incredible spirit. She came to us from a heartbreaking situation in extremely poor condition, and since arriving, she has already overcome so much. Star has undergone dental work that included tooth extractions, a minor eyelid surgery, and has also been diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. Between her age and medical needs, her recovery will be a long road, but she continues to make wonderful progress every day.

Despite everything she has endured, Star has remained kind and willing. From the moment she left the shelter, she has been easy to handle, though understandably a bit nervous at times. While we may never know the full story of her past, it is clear she has been through more than her fair share. Even so, she still greets each day with a strong desire to move forward.

Star knows how to lead, load, and tie, though she would benefit from additional desensitizing while tied to help build her confidence. She is excellent for the farrier and, once she settles in around you, reveals a calm and easygoing personality.

We believe Star would thrive in a quiet home with consistency, patience, and an intermediate to experienced handler who can continue showing her that people can be kind. She can currently be a little difficult to catch, but we feel this will improve as she gains trust and settles into a routine. In the herd, Star tends to sit toward the higher end of the pecking order, though she is not overly dominant — just your typical mare with the occasional squeal.

Star still has a journey ahead of her, but she is more than deserving of a soft landing and a loving retirement home where she can finally feel safe, cared for, and appreciated. We know it will take a very special kind of person to take her in, but we know you are out there!

The photos of her shaved are her most recent photos! She was shaved to help deal with the Oklahoma heat and because she was not shedding her thick winter coat like she should have been. We will be continuing to help her gain proper weight and give her the time she needs while she is in our care. In the meantime, don't hesitate to reach out and ask about her!
