Iris recently came to Easy R Equine Rescue as an owner surrender. The owner had informed us that she was hard to catch and halter. We had scheduled a veterinary appointment to administer vaccines and draw blood for a Coggins. When we arrived, Iris had jumped a chain-link fence and had cuts all over her body. Most were superficial, but one on her chest required stitches. Iris was inderweight and probably had a heavy parasite load. She is leery and has an exaggerated startle response. But she is coming along very well with her foster mom! She is getting much easier to catch, standing for grooming, and getting the hang of work in the round pen. She seems very smart and catches onto things quickly. She has some soft tissue swelling in a front knee and hock. X rays didn't show any arthritis or bony changes. Fortunately, the swelling isn't causing any lameness or evidence of pain. She will soon be seen by the farrier and equine dentist. The foster mom is committed to teaching Iris how to be a confident girl and learn all the things needed to be safe on the ground. When it's deemed appropriate a saddle will be added during her groundwork in the round pen.
