Ground Manners: Bachelor is a sweet boy that is working hard on his ground manners - he stands patiently for grooming and picks up his feet, is calm in halter and good for leading. He ties, cross ties, and is learning to ground tie. Bachelor is progressing with learning to have his ears and head touched and to be patient and respectful of his handler, waiting for cues before proceeding.
Lifestyle: Bachelor is doing well with clicker training and husbandry skills. He is very quiet in a stall and seems to prefer a small group turn out. He falls in the middle of the pecking order. He loves to hang out in the field with his buddies TJ, and Frannie and likes to play. He lives outside 24/7 with his other CANTER foster friends and does well in winter with access to shelter and wearing a blanket but has also been stalled in the past. Bachelor prefers to eat his grain by himself in a stall and is a perfect gentleman with food with people. He stands well for the farrier and is mostly barefoot year-round but wears Easy Care boots when the ground gets super hard in the winter.
Personality: He may not be the largest Thoroughbred on the farm at 16.1h but this guy is BIG in personality! His lives up to his name! Bachelor is definitely the funny man on the farm. He is curious, loves to be engaged in new things, and is always up for coming in to play. In fact, be careful what you leave in the pasture, as he will pick it up, toss it, move it around, chew on it, whatever he can do to play with it. This is with 24/7 access to hay, so he is doing it for just the giggles! Bachelor is a sweet boy that is working on his confidence and focusing. He likes people and seems eager to please. He is clever and seems to genuinely enjoy learning his new agility skills. Part of his fun-loving personality is also his desire to learn and be a part of EVERYTHING. So, you might be working on ground tying, but he will see his friend TJ at the other end of the arena working on the pedestal obstacle, and Bachelor will just try to mosey on over to see what TJ is doing. Did I mention that he is complete character?
Suitability: Bachelor came to CANTER on 8/22/22 with a sesamoid fracture that required rehab. He walks, trots, and canters under saddle without any issues, but with his soundness issues he is only offered to a non-riding home.
As part of his training, Bachelor has also been exposed to wheelchairs, walkers, canes to see how he might do with people who might have physical disabilities, and he shows promise for equine coaching or therapy work. Bachelor has been training with his buddy TJ on positive reinforcement for agility. Bachelor and TJ would make great equine facilitated learning (EFL) equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) horses within the wellness industry. They do very well together as a unit and their trainer could see them tuning in and participating in wellness sessions safely and with a great impact.
